3 Factors that Affect Your Website’s Ranking

Whether its search engine optimization (SEO) or search engine marketing (SEM), it’s all about search engines! And if you’ve been keeping up with our previous blog posts, you know how big of a deal search engines are to online marketing.

But do we really know how they operate?

Every year MOZ conducts a survey over a sample size of more than 150 SEO experts to see what features they notice that high-ranking websites have in regard to Google’s search engine. Here are the 3 biggest factors that I took away from that survey:

  1. Domain-level link features
  2. Page-level link features
  3. Page-level keyword and content-based features

Domain-level Link Features

With a whopping 8.22 out of 10 in terms of level of influence to a website’s ranking on Google, domain-level link features is the top priority. Things like the number of links on your website, the relevance those links have to your home page, and the authority of the websites those links refer to all fall into this category of domain-level link features.

Page-level Link Features

Similar to domain-level link features, this factor scored an 8.19 out of 10. It includes features such as the number of links on your individual web pages, the relevance of those links to that specific page’s content, and the authority of the websites those links refer to. And if you’re wondering, the biggest difference between page-level and domain-level link features is that page-level refers to individual web pages while domain-level refers to the website’s homepage.

Page-level Keyword and content-based features

Finally, with a score of 7.87 out of 10, page-level keywords and content-based features are the third most important factor found on high ranking websites. It refers to the keywords and relevancy of the content that is posted on your website’s individual pages.
