Alonso’s Crash

Formula 1 testing is well underway in Barcelona. Between Grosjean’s impressive run and Maldonado’s Lotus domination, there is no shortage of things to talk about. Despite the impressive cars and the promise of a good season, the incident that has received the most conversation is Fernando Alonso’s crash.

During testing at the Circuit de Catalunya, Alonso struck the wall on Turn Three at 12:35 CET. Alonso was immediately rushed off to the hospital where they determined that he had only suffered a concussion and would be back to the race soon. They did keep Alonso overnight and made sure to state that this is normal protocol for such an injury.

While some details have been released about the cause of the crash, the full story still hasn’t been released. Without a full story, the Formula 1 community has created many different hypothesis for what happened in that turn that would cause an experience driver to hit the wall. One theory is that Alonso was not feeling well before getting behind the wheel. Could this have affected this pro driver?

A photographer announced that he saw Alonso’s head turn strangely right before he lost control and other’s believe that he could have suffered from a seizure. This would explain why individuals say it looked like Alonso purposefully drove his car into the wall.

Another theory is that Alonso received an electric shock during the race or that he was drowsy due to inhaling battery fumes. Some speculate that his car malfunctioned and it had nothing to do with Alonso at all. While fans and media may speculate, Alonso’s manager Luis Garcia Abad claims that the wind could have caused the accident. This is a valid explanation. There were strong winds reports on track and another driver, Toro Rosso, also crashed that day due to wind.

Wind? Sickness? Shock? All we can do now is speculate as to what caused the accident. One thing is for sure though, Alonso is alright and will make a full recovery. Also, the car also did not suffer much damage and after a look over is cleared to race again. We will see Alonso and his McLaren-Honda car back on the track soon.
