Dayton 500 2015

The Dayton 500 has always be a fan favorite. The classic track promises quality entertainment every year and this season was no different. If you missed it, don’t worry! Here is an overview of what happened:

Joey Lagano Takes the Win

Winning the Dayton 500 is one of the biggest achievements of a NASCR driver. It’s the kind of win that stays with you throughout the rest of your career. This year 24-year old Penske driver Joey Lagano secured the first position in the race to the Sprint Cup with his outstanding performance during the race. Off to such a great start, it will be exciting to see what great things Joey will do throughout the rest of the season.

Dale Jr. Disappointed

For a few moments in the race it looked as if Dale Jr. could pull out a win. But, after attempting a maneuver to pass teammate Jimmie Johnson with 19 laps remaining failed, all hope was lost. While dropping back to 7th place, Dale Jr. worked hard and eventually won himself a spot in 3rd place for that final lap. Overall, not a bad race, but Dale claims he had the best car out there and should have been able to win. Disappointed in himself for making a bad move, other drivers might want to watch out next race because Dale Jr. has something to prove.

Kurt Busch Misses Out

NASCAR nation did not get to see Kurt Busch race during the Daytona 500 this year. After fighting allegations of abuse against his ex-girlfriend, NASCAR maintained its decision to suspend Busch indefinitely. Despite Kurt’s many attempts to get the ban lifted, he was forced to sit the bench and watch his team race without him.

Stewart Can’t Make it Happen

After racing in 17 Dayton 500’s, NASCAR legend Tony Stewart hoped that this year would be his year to take home the trophy. Unfortunately, Stewart suffered disappointment early on in the race. During lap 41, Stewart was involved in an accident that left him out of the race by lap 108. With a 42nd place finished and his 4th DNF at Daytona, Stewart was quick to blame himself for the loss. He mentioned that his team took as many laps as possible and decided to back out before any more damage was done that would result in damage to others.

Kyle Busch Still Recovering

After a nasty accident, Kyle Busch has been released from a hospital in Florida. He is expected to make a full recovery and join the races as soon as possible. Unfortunately, like his brother, Kyle was unable to race in this years Daytona 500, but the NASCAR nation is excited for his return.

Jeff Gordon Enjoys the Race

With his announcement of retirement after the 2015 season, the whole NASCAR nation has kept an eye on Jeff Gordon. Gordon fought well during the beginning of the race, but fell behind and had to play catch up for the second half the race due to poor positioning. A top 5 finish could have been possible for this living legend if not for a multi-car crash on the final lap that left Gordon in 33rd place. Despite the poor finish, Gordon seemed happy just to be able to compete in his 23rd Dayton 500. He seems to be taking everything in this last season and making every moment count.
