Fisherman’s Cars Swallowed by Frozen Lake

What started as a leisurely day of ice-fishing in Russia ended very unexpectedly for the group of 12 fishing buddies. They set out to fill their cars with fresh fish to bring home and cook up on the grill, but instead their cars got filled with water as they sank slowly to the depths of Gertner Bay.

Just as the group of fishermen was setting up their gear, they heard a loud crack, and turned around just in time to see their cars slowly disappearing into the cold lake. 11 cars were lost to the water, but one fisherman was able to rescue his Toyota Surf before it went under completely. Acting quickly, he tied a rope to the front of the vehicle and used a friend’s car to help pull it out.

Cracking ice is normally not a concern in the Russian winter, but on this particular day at Gertner Bay in the Sea of Okhotsk, the temperatures were just hot enough during the peak afternoon hours that the ice cracked under the weight of so many vehicles. As weather expert Dmitry Aksyonov told CEN: “Those who go out onto frozen lakes at night are generally fine, but for those who are still there in the afternoon, as this group was, it is highly dangerous as the ice is melting.”

Ice fishing can be dangerous, but normally the concern is that the fishermen themselves will get trapped under the ice, not their vehicles. Maybe next time they will find a different parking spot.
