The Future of Self Driving Cars

We all remember “Meet the Jetsons.” Featured in a Saturday morning cartoon, the Jetsons were a family of the future. Husband George travelled around in a flying car and household robot Rosie cooked and cleaned. Back in 1962 when the cartoon first aired, it seemed like the life the Jetsons lived would never be a possibility, but over the last 80+ years the whole world has creeped closer to the world of the future. We have robots that sweep and mop and computers that respond when we talk to them.

Just this week, Delphi, an auto parts company, released the first self driven car to be driven across the country. The Audi SQ5 started in San Francisco and will finish in Manhattan. Due to state laws, there will always be at least 1 person in the vehicle while driving. The car has made a few stops on the way to its destination including a visit to In-N-Out.

While we may not have created cars that fly, the auto industry is working hard to keep up with the increasing futuristic world. For example, auto makers have started introducing Wi-Fi options so that a car can be totally connected with all of the users other devices. Also, we can talk to our cars to turn on the radio and give us directions. (Sound familiar Knight Rider fans?)

Besides the introduction of Wi-Fi, car companies are also developing self-driving cars. Google already has plenty of prototypes that have been tested on the open road. These modern cars stop at stop signs, yield at lights, and even maintain the proper speed limit.

Pretty cool right? So why aren’t these amazing vehicles being sold yet? Google hasn’t worked out all the bugs yet. The car memorizes a map and needs updated if something changes. For example, if a new light was put up overnight, the car would not know how to respond. Besides its consistent need to be updated, the car has a few other problems. For example, the car does not know how to handle weather, potholes, or the sudden appearance of humans in the street which is kind of a big deal.

Who knows how long it will take Google to work out all the issues with its modern self-driving car. While it might take years or even decades, one thing for sure. The world is slowly becoming more and more like the futuristic cartoons we watched as kids.
