Fastest Car in the World

In early 2014, the Hennessey Venom GT set a record of 270.49 mph, narrowly beating out the previous record holder, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, by just 0.63 mph. But technically Bugatti still officially holds the title.

Why? In order for the record of fastest car in the world to be official, the Guinness World Record requires two attempts in opposite directions, to take tailwinds into account. They then work out an average speed from the two attempts. When the Hennessey Venom GT made the attempt on NASA’s 3.2 mile Space Shuttle landing runway, it fell the tiniest bit shy of the requirements.

But don’t think this fast car isn’t impressive just because it fell a little short. Venom GT’s notable speed records include fastest car from 0-200 mph (14.51 seconds). With a low weight (1,244 kg) and a high power output (1,244 bhp) from its 7.0 litre twin-turbo V8 engine, the Hennessey Venom GT was built for speed. And it continues to impress, but it’s not unbeatable.

Which car will be crowned fastest next?
