Time For a Tune Up: Improve your Social Media SEO

When I was kid, my social network was called “outside”

Everyone can make jokes but social media is growing every day and many consider it the future of marketing. If your business isn’t on social media it needs to be because I guarantee your competition is already on it. I know you must have tons of questions but let’s start at the beginning with SEO.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is every action taken to ensure your website can be found in search engine results when searching for words relevant to content on your website. So when I start talking about Social Media SEO I’m referring to the part social media plays in helping your website get discovered in search engine results.

So now that we’ve discussed the basic concept of SEO and Social Media SEO let’s dive into optimizing your social media to work for you, not against you.

1: Don’t Cut Corners

  • The key to a SEO social media site is being as descriptive as possible. Always fill out the ‘About’ or ‘Information’ sections of your social media sites.
  • Use words or phrases that perfectly describe your business and that can also be keywords that customers might use to search for your business.
  • Make sure to include your address, city, state and zip code. This will help your business be found on local searches.

2: Be Active

You spent so much time setting up your profiles and putting the right information in, don’t let them go unused. Social media is such a big tool to boost your business, plus it’s free.

  • Seesmic, Digsby, TweetDeck, and HootSuite are all “Social Media Managers” that can help manage your social media sites. Using these sites can make it easier to find and post content daily.
  • Put someone in charge of updating social media sites daily

3: One Stop Shop

  • Put links on everything. There should be a link to your business web page on all your social media sites. I would recommend also providing links to your social media profiles on your web page. Make sure that if the customer goes to one site they could possibly have access to all the other sites.
  • Blogging is still as important as it was 10 years ago. This could be something you post on your social media sites to improve content. Blogging is also a great way for you to show off your expertise and knowledge of the service you provide.

4: Google + Is Your Friend

  • Create a Google+ Business Page and fill out as many fields as you can in the “About” section using keywords to describe your business.
  • Make sure to provide links to your website and social media sites.
  • Treat this like every other social media site and update it daily. Doing this could make your business more likely to appear in Google’s search engine results.
