Tony Stewart’s Return to NASCAR

2014 was a tough year for NASCAR legend Tony Stewart. After suffering a serious accident and painful losses, August 9th spelled disaster when Stewart hit and killed 20-year-old Kevin Ward during a NASCAR race.

After the incident, Tony Stewart disappeared. Brief media appearances showed a totally different Stewart than the strong, competitive, hot-headed champion that the world had previously known. Even though Stewart was cleared of blame, the NASCAR nation questioned whether or not this three time Sprint Cup Champion and majority owner of Stewart-Haas racing team would ever be back behind the wheel.

Despite the temptation to walk away, Stewart has decided to join the chase and race in 2015 and already we’re starting to see the old Tony. Between tweeting out statements that show his highly competitive nature and his early “disagreements” with NASCAR officials, it seems that Stewart has begun his road to recovery.

But will Tony Stewart ever be the same? Will we see him dominate the track like the man of the past? Unlikely. As much as Stewart is a skilled driver, age may take its toll. At 44, Stewart has passed his peak and may not be able to compete against new drivers like 18-year-old Chase Elliott.

On the other hand, Stewart has consistently performed well when he needs to prove something. There is no doubt that Tony has something to prove to both himself and the fans this season. “Deep down inside I know who I am as a person and I know who I am as a driver,” he says, “and that’s what I want to get back to.”

Only time will tell whether or not Tony will be able to hold his own this season and make up for the woes of last year. One thing is for sure, Tony will forever be a part of NASCAR. Despite the highs and lows, racing is his life and his passion. When asked about retiring, Stewart said “I’ll know when it’s time to step away from the sport. I’ve seen too many guys hang on for too long, just a big name cruising around in the back collecting checks. That won’t be me. I love this too much and I can always just go and put on my owner’s hat full-time.”

Welcome back Tony. We wish you the best!
