Website Definitions: Glossery of terms you should know

Technology can be the best thing for a small business. But technology is only useful when you use it in the right way. Webpages are the best resource for your customers to find you online. For someone just getting started, or someone looking to have a site designed, all the technical jargon can be overwhelming. Let’s go over some of the basics to get you started.

1. BackLinks: These are links to other websites on your page. Using Back Links normally increase popularity with search engines and get more people to visit your website. Don’t leave home without it.

2. Banner: This is a graphic that is placed around a website for advertising. A banner could be a single image or could even be animated.

2. Cookies: No I’m not talking about the kind your grandmother makes (wish I was). A cookie is a small piece of information that websites store on your computer when you visit them. Have you ever noticed that after you visit a certain page (let’s say “How to change your Oil”) you’ll start getting advertisements for similar products, like oil and car information? These are cookies at work. They can track how many times you visit the page and how long since you visited the page.

3. HTML: Short for “HyperText Markup Language,” HTML is a cross-platform language for creating and formatting web pages. HTML is a language that website are written in. HTML is the skeleton that gives a website structure.

4. SEO: Search Engine Optimization. These are actions taken to achieve the highest search engine ranking. Higher SEO helps customers find your website easier.

3. Server: This is a computer that is used to house websites and has physical storage areas for web pages and emails. Servers are provided by the internet provider you have and are typically housed in great numbers (The internet has a lot of data)

5. URL: There is no lack of acronyms when it comes to Webpage language. URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. Website URL is the address, which specifies where on the internet it can be found (Awesomeblog.com)
