Toyota’s Hydrogen Car

After 20 years of research and testing, Toyota is excited to put the Mirai on the marketing in 2015. The Mirai (which is Japanese for future) is Toyota’s new hydrogen powered car that is priced to sell at $50,000 in California.

What makes this car different? For starters, the car uses hydrogen to create energy. It only expels water and heat instead of smog.

What else? There is not a motor with moving parts under the hood. Instead, the car uses a hydrogen power cell. The patents for this technology have been released free of charge to the market of car manufactures.

Toyota wants to drive innovation. They understand that they cannot transform the automotive industry alone and so they have released their ideas for other people to build on.

While this new car sounds amazing, there is one big drawback. Even though fueling the car only takes 5 minutes, the stations where the car can be refueled are few and far between. The few stations that do exist are in California and in support of the new vehicle the California government has invested millions to help install more stations throughout the state. Since the car can go 300 miles on one tank, you won’t have to fill up too often, but you definitely need somewhere to go.

Time will tell whether or not hydrogen cars will become a standard in the automotive industry. That being said, toyota seems to be making great strides in this environmentally friendly option and should be commended for their groundbreaking innovation.
